Full Description
<1> Gifford and Partners, 1992, Archaeological Evaluation At Lewin Street, Middlewich, Cheshire (Client Report). SCH4162.
An archaeological evaluation of land between Lewin St, Wych House Lane & Trent and Mersey Canal was undertaken in May 1992 in advance of development. The area is known to have been site of salt works dating from the medieval period. Nine trial trenches excavated within area in May 1992 revealed 19th and 20th century wall and floor foundations and debris from the demolition of buildings associated with a Methodist chapel, salt working buildings and schools.
<2> Gifford and Partners, 1993, Report on an Archaeological Watching Brief carried out on Land beside Lewin Street, Middlewich, Cheshire (Client Report). SCH1929.
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in September 1993 during groundworks. It recorded a series of postholes and pits containing medieval pottery, aligned with the orientation of Lewin St. Three larger pits had straight sides and edges and probably flat bases. These possibly represent brine pits and may originally have been clay or wicker lined.
