Full Description
Wych House Lane site. A large clay-lined pit measuring c.6m x 5m had been dug into redeposited medieval layers, which were excavated to a depth of 3m. Large quantities of medieval pottery & animal bones were found. Excavation by Rebecca Smart for the Liverpool University Rescue Archaeology Unit. 8 other trial trenches were dug in Middlewich over a period of 4 months prior to development, to determine the extent of Roman & medieval settlement. The Wych House Lane site was the most interesting (1).
