Full Description
Bronze Age palstave found c.1985, on the surface as a result of drainage operations.(1) Palstave 172mm lg x 74mm across widest point of blade with flanges which extend to max width 37mm. Weight:591.64g. Palstave has expanded blade (shows signs of being sharpened over its outer 5mm), angled flanges & a smoothly & sharply curved stop-ridge below which is a sub-triangular shallow depression. Septum is quite thin with small hollow adjacent to stop-ridge. 9mm thick at butt end & c15mm towards stop-ridge. No loop. Casting seams from 2-part mould are visible on either side. Blade edge & angle of junction betwn blade & sides of axe & end of septum are damaged with small pieces missing. Areas of blue oxidisation on faces. Also small amount of recent damage. This palstave belongs to Burgess' Pickering Phase of MBA c1400-1200BC, prob Group 1 'unlooped shield pattern'. This eg. is probably early in the sequence, c1400-1300BC. (2)
