Full Description
Possible deserted medieval village at Newbold. First mentioned in Domesday Book in 1086, with a priest. It seems that the original of the township was Newbold, as Astbury does not appear in Domesday. The ecclesiastical & manorial importance of Astbury would have caused the name Newbold to be superseded by that of Astbury. However, there remains the possibility that Astbury is in fact the more ancient name, but that by 1086 the manorial centre had been moved to a new site at Newbold, and that the old name & site returned to pre-eminence as a result of St Werburgh's possession of Astbury (1). Alternative location for this site given in RN 158/0.
