Full Description

Possible site of Civil War Battery, dated 1643, at Congleton Edge (see 2).

No trace of earthworks [W.W. 19/10/1957].

"...Sir William [Brereton] pitched his forces at a place known as Congleton Edge, where a battery was erected to act against the west side of the [Biddulph] hall, but owing to distance little impression was made…".

Renaud only gives Congleton Edge as the location of the camp and battery of Brereton’s Parliamentary troops. The battery was most likely located on the Staffordshire side of the Edge within a mile or half mile of Biddulph Hall.
