Summary

A watermill with medieval origins, by 1839 the mill had an ancillary steam engine either used to increase the flow of water to the wheel or to power the mill when sufficient water wasn’t available in the mill pond. The mill dam and mill pond survive as earthworks to the immediate north and north east of the mill.

A watermill at Rode Heath: the tithe apportionment indicates a watermill with an auxiliary steam engine in 1839 (see 3). Documentary references from 1315 (see 2).

Documentary reference to molendinum (aquaticum) de Rode dating from 1315. There are further references to a watermill dating from 1328, 1329 and 1722.

The apportionment records a house, corn mill, yard, outbuildings and garden, and the mill pond to the north-east.

A three-storey brick building with chimney for auxiliary steam engine. The wheel and all the machinery have been removed.

This map depicts the mill with the mill house to the south and further buildings to the north. The mill dam, generally aligned north-south and with a slight curve, is located to the immediate north and north east of the mill. The lane serving the mill may be located on the dam or between the dam and the mill buildings. The mill pond has an unusual L or U shape. The overflow leat is on the north-western side of the mill pond. Labelled Rode Mill (Flour).

Further buildings have been constructed to the north. A weir and sliuce are depicted at the south-eastern end of the mill pond. A new sluice and overflow leat have been constructed to the south-west of the original.
