Summary

Part of a mosaic floor, made of black and white tessera, was found in association with other Roman finds at the site of the Hop Pole Hotel, shortly following its demolition in 1923 – 1924 to make way for Stead and Simpson's new buildings. The associated finds included late first to second century pottery, which was also found later during 1959 excavations on the same site.

Full Description

Part of a mosaic floor, made of black and white tessera, was found in association with other Roman finds at the site of the Hop Pole Hotel, shortly following its demolition in 1923 – 1924 to make way for Stead and Simpson's new buildings. The associated finds included late first to second century pottery, including Samian ware (1).

In 1959, outside W H Smith's (which is on the site of the former Hop Pole Hotel), a small quantity of Roman pottery, including late first and early second century Samian ware and a lead disc, were found during trenching for the Post Office (2).
