Full Description
Part of a mosaic floor, made of black and white tessera, was found in association with other Roman finds at the site of the Hop Pole Hotel, shortly following its demolition in 1923 – 1924 to make way for Stead and Simpson's new buildings. The associated finds included late first to second century pottery, including Samian ware (1).
In 1959, outside W H Smith's (which is on the site of the former Hop Pole Hotel), a small quantity of Roman pottery, including late first and early second century Samian ware and a lead disc, were found during trenching for the Post Office (2).
