Monument record 1063/1 - Possible Location of Hulme Mill

Summary

Suggested as the location of Hulme Mill, a water powered corn mill mentioned in documents dating from twelfth to thirteenth centuries. Watermills are known to have been used in Britain during Roman and Saxon times. In the Domesday survey of 1086, around 6,000 mills were recorded. In medieval times each manor that the right to have its own mill with the peasants forced to use it. A tax was payable on all corn ground and there were fines for those to tried to mill corn in their own homes using hand querns.

Unsure of the source for the grid reference given in (1). The tithe award (see 4) records Mill Meadow (see 2) at SJ77486618, c.300m north of Park Mill (CHER 1068/1).
