Full Description
<1> Dodgson J McN, 1970-2, 1981, The Place-Names of Cheshire, Vol .II p.305 (Book). SCH3228.
A document of 1354 mentions the "the peel and the mote of Great Moreton".
<2> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards, R, 09/04/2015 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.
Although the precise location of the possible moat and peel tower are unknown, it's not unreasonable to suggest that it may have been in close proximity to the mill (CHER 131/4/1), mill pond (CHER 131/4/2) and seventeenth century hall (CHER 131/2/1), all of which are depicted on the 1838 tithe map for the township (see 3).
<3> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 278/2, 1838 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.
