Summary

Archaeological investigation on the derelict land adjacent to Hawk Street found 3 phases of medieval occupation. These included the remains of at least one house, probably half timbered, which may have been encased or replaced by a later brick structure. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to created solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.

Full Description

Trench on the derelict land adjacent to the NE side of Hawk Street. Beneath the brick footings of properties constructed in the 18th & 19th centuries & demolished in the 1970s, were found 3 phases of medieval occupation. These included the remains of at least one house, probably half timbered, built on padstones, although with earth-fast timbers in the walls and a clay floor. Since these were directly beneath the brick walls it is probable that the earlier building had been encased or replaced by a later brick structure. Excavated by Rebecca Smart & John Samuels for the Liverpool University Rescue Archaeology Unit (1).
