Full Description
3 trenches at the rear of the Crown Hotel, on an area of derelict land shown as gardens or orchards on the 1893 OS 25inch map. Post medieval activity, including buildings, boundary ditches & rubbish pits, disturbed all areas, but in all cases distinct traces of medieval occupation were also found. Most of this was limited to boundary ditches, isolated postholes & pits. Cutting I - located between a derelict barn to W & adjacent to the footpath, revealed possible boundary ditches of medieval burgage plots. Cutting II - opposite cutting I & on the other side of the footpath, revealed a medieval ditch & pit with 14th & 15th C potsherds, & possibly a medieval clay-lined oven. Cutting III - located on the E side of the footpath. Excavated by Rebecca Smart & John Samuels for Liverpool University Rescue Archaeology Unit (1).
