Summary

Grade II listed late 17th century Mansion. Rebuilt in 1817 and altered in 1974. Brick built with slate roof. A suggested moat at the site has been judged to be a natural feature.

Full Description

Twemlow Hall, Forty Acre Lane, Twemlow Green. Mansion late 17th century, rebuilt 1817 and altered 1974. Red brick in English Garden Wall Bond with slate roof. Stone plinth, flush stone quoins. Ovolo moulded stone door opening with stepped label surmounted by stone tablet with the crest of the Booth family. Interior: substantially altered during the 1974 alterations. The entrance hall has a sqaure open ceiling well surmounted by Jacobean style balusters. There is a matching staircase at the rear with twisted balusters (1). Full architectural description (1) and (2). The manor house of Twemlowe is an ancient house, formerly moated, of which there are still some remains and standing on the brow of a hill, commanding some romantic views (3). Twemlowe Hall, an ancient mansion, finished with gables and surrounded with vestiges of an ancient moat and strong terraces (4). OS conclude that the moat is a natural feature. The southern slopes are those of a natural hillside approx 7m high and the remaining slopes belong either to a natural re-entrant or to a former sandpit, which opens out into a fairly wide valley in the north west (5).
