Full Description

A furnace for the smelting of iron was established at Church Lawton shortly after 1658, when a lease was obtained of the site of a corn mill (see 2).
No information was obtained [Rigg, J. F.I. 23/09/1964].

John Turner of Stafford obtained from William Lawton in April 1658 a twenty-one-year lease at a rent of £44 a year for a forge at a corn mill at Church Lawton. Ownership disputes arising from debts associated with the furnace persisted till at least 1676.

There were two watermills on the Lawton Estate which may have been the site of the iron furnace (see CHER 136/2/1 & CHER 136/2/2).
