Summary

A picturesque range of late sixteenth or early seventeenth century cottages with later alterations. Now shops. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the seventeenth century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to created solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.

A picturesque range of late sixteenth or early seventeenth century former cottages with later alterations. Painted roughcast to earlier timber frame revealed on gabled ends and at rear; one storey and attic; two gabled dormers with nineteenth century iron casements and two nineteenth century rectangular dormers with casement windows and slate pentice roofs; slate roof with old stone slates to rear fall. Ground storey generally altered with nineteenth century and modern shop fronts. Timber framing of gabled ends, which rest on stone base, unusually well-preserved. Nos 6 to 12 (even) form a group with No 1 Wagg Street.
