Summary

Standing isolated in a field is a large regular pile of stones. It is rectangular in plan with concave sides and stands over 3 metres high. Against the eastern side are a set of steps. There is evidence of vitrification of the stone, suggesting it was associated with a furnace or kiln, but its true function is unknown. Pot and brick in the pile suggest a 19th century date and it is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps dating from the period .

Full Description

Standing isolated in a field is a large regular pile of stones. It is rectangular in plan with concave sides and stands over 3m high. Against the eastern side are a set of steps. There is evidence of vitrification of the stone, suggesting it was associated with a furnace or kiln, but its true function is unknown. Pot and brick in the pile suggest a nineteenth century date (1). A small irregular 'hour glass' shaped feature is shown on the 1st and 2nd edition 25" to 1 mile maps (2 & 3). A small rectangular structure is shown on the southern side of the feature on the 3rd edition 25" to 1 mile map (4).
