‘…By 1584 a grammar school had been founded adjacent to the Higher Chapel and the corporation was responsible for its maintenance. No visible remains of this survive today. References in 1588 and 1600 to the old schoolhouse imply that it was of some antiquity and Head (see 3) states that ‘it is assumed to have been founded in the 15th century’…’
