Summary

A number of samian vessels were found in a sandpit when the playing fields were extended in 1936. 12 vessels in poor condition were found, but only 2 potters stamps could be identified. One of Priscinus, a potter at the time of Trajan-Hadrian and one of Silivani, which may be Silvanus, a Hadrianic-Antonine potter. The site is now a car park.

Full Description

A number of samian vessels were found in a sandpit on Southway, off Wheelock Street, when the playing fields were extended in 1936. 12 vessels in poor condition were found, but only 2 potters stamps could be identified. One of Priscinus, a potter at the time of Trajan-Hadrian & one of Silivani, which may be Silvanus, a Hadrianic-Antonine potter (1). Only Roman finds found to the west of the Trent-Mersey canal. Sandpit is now a carpark (2). OS give grid ref SJ 70236613, but Mr Stubbs identified the site as the carpark at SJ 70146615 (3). This site is outside the assumed perimeter of the Roman settlement and may have been a burial site or ancillary settlement (4).
