Summary

During non-archaeological excavations in 1964 near the new St Bridget's Church (built in 1827 but now demolished), at the junction of Grosvenor St. and Castle Esplanade, an inscribed altar was found among loose stones, with roofing tiles (some with legionary stamps), Roman coins, pottery, a brooch, a lead lamp and the lid of a seal-box of 'tear drop' form.

Full Description

During non-archaeological excavations in 1964 near the new St Bridget's Church (built in 1827 but now demolished), at the junction of Grosvenor St. and Castle Esplanade, an inscribed altar was found among loose stones, with roofing tiles (some with legionary stamps), Roman coins, pottery, a brooch, a lead lamp and the lid of a seal-box of 'tear drop' form (1). The lid measured 3.16 by 2.2cm, the edge was slightly damaged and it was inlaid with enamel (2).
