Summary

At some time during the clearance of part of the outer bailey of Chester Castle to make way for Thomas Harrison's new buildings between 1789 and 1817 (note the reference to these finds are from c 1789), an amount of Roman pottery, including Samian ware with potters' stamps, coins and what are reported as mutilated inscriptions was found.

Full Description

At some time during the clearance of part of the outer bailey of Chester Castle to make way for Thomas Harrison's new buildings between 1789 and 1817 (note the reference to these finds are from c 1789), an amount of Roman pottery, including Samian ware with potters' stamps, coins and what are reported as mutilated inscriptions was found (1, 2, 3).

The exact position of these finds is not known, but may have been from under the Shire Hall block (4). The monument’s GIS point has been placed along the line of the outer bailey.
