Full Description
Excavations at Crypt Court (Commonhall St.) in1954 revealed extensive Roman and medieval remains, but in Trench 4 a very deep (over 1m) pit was found to contain an assemblage of Saxon pottery (1). Largely cooking pot fragments and some jars, the assemblage could be dated to the late Saxon period. It might be that the pit does not date to this time, and the assemblage is residual; both Roman and medieval pottery fragments were also reported from this context (1, 2).
