Full Description
A small-scale excavation by the Grosvenor Museum against the north face of City Wall, 40m west of Northgate, in 1980 investigated the Roman fortress' rampart at this location (1). In the extreme upper levels of the bank, a small fragment of Chester ware was found (1). Indicative only of perhaps ephemeral late Saxon period activity at this location, the find is considered intrusive (1, 2).
