Full Description
Several medieval features were recorded during archaeological investigations at 27 Newgate Street in 1960. The work was carried out in advance of redevelopment and monitored by F.H. Thompson.
The features comprised a rock cut well in the north east corner of the site and an adjacent rectangular cess pit lined with regularly coursed sandstone masonry 3.40m by 2.33m internally, both were believed to be medieval features. Finds from the cess pit included fragments of crested ridge tile and the spout of a large pitcher, a French import of late 13th century date. (1)
