Summary

In 1885 during drainage work in a field in the vicinity of Beeston Castle, workmen discovered three stone implements. An axe hammer, a larger stone axe, which was broken into pieces by the workmen and not recovered and a stone polished axe, with a sharp cutting edge. The axe hammer is a stone shafthole axe and made of brownish grey fine-grained greywacke from the southern Lake District (Group XV).

In 1885 during drainage work in a field in the vicinity of Beeston Castle, workmen discovered 3 stone implements. An axe hammer, possibly of greenstone, eight inches long, two and a half inches wide and weighing nearly five pounds; symmetrically shaped with a sharp cutting edge at one end. A larger stone axe, which was broken into pieces by the workmen and not recovered and a stone polished axe, with a sharp cutting edge.

In 1911 the two recovered axes were held at Peckforton Castle and casts of the axes were held at the Grosvenor Museum.

In 1953 the axe hammer was on loan to the Grosvenor. Axe hammer classed as stone shafthole axe and made of brownish grey fine-grained greywacke (Group XV), with hour glass perforation, squared edges, expanded blade, rounded butt. One end of cutting edge broken off. Slight scratches to body. Section removed for analysis.
