Full Description
An elaborately decorated fragment of a large cistern-like vessel with a single handle. Recovered from the River Dee, below the west bank. The fabric is extremely hard and a grey-purple in colour, coated with a metallic lustred dark brown-purple. Of a type in use locally during the second half of the 16th century continuing into the 17th century. The applied strip decoration and baggy form harks back to lower fired late medieval types, surviving into the 16th century, but it is also related to stamped and incised wares popular during the first half of the 17th century (1). Ref 1 says location uncertain, but ref 2 gives SJ 415627.
