Monument record 1700/1/16 - Roman Road - Eccleston (Chester to Wroxeter Route 6a)

Please read our .

Summary

Excavation on the line of Watling Street Roman road at Eccleston, where it was due to be destroyed by roadworks for Chester Bypass. A surface of gravel and small cobbles set in clay and laid directly on natural clay. Metalling sealed Roman pottery showed the road was probably constructed in the late Flavian period. There is no evidence that the road was placed on an agger, earthwork previously identified as such having no connection with road. No sign of kerb. The width of the road probably exceeded 15ft. This is an indication of heavy wear resulting in uneven surface and rutting. Watling Street is the name given to the roman road that links Chester with Wroxeter, and Caerleon. It is not to be confused with the Watling Street that runs from the SE coast through London then onto Verulamium ( St Albans) and (Viroconium) Wroxeter. The route of the road can be followed from Chester to its crossing point of the Dee at Aldford and then onto Malpas where it disappears from the landscape.
