Monument record 1771/0/3 - Village Stocks, Tilston

Please read our .

Summary

The village stocks at Tilson at the end of Church Road, opposite the Carden Arms. The stocks are enclosed by a sandstone wall on three sides. Pitting on the coping stones suggest they once held railings and suggest that they may have been reused. At the front are two renewed sandstone piers which hold a split oak plank, with two 10cm diameter footholdes. Inside is a two-stepped sandstone seat. Stocks were used as a form of punishment in towns and villages from medieval times to the 19th century. A person would be placed in the stocks and fastened by their ankles and subject to public humiliation.

Full Description

Stocks, Church Road. Red sandstone. Three sided with square piers at front corners holding two-holed wooden stocks across front. Two-stepped sandstone seat inside. Some pitted coping stones may have held railings, or been reused (1). Stocks set on broad pavement at junction of Malpas Road and Church Road. Two renewed red sandstone piers measuring 1.12m high by 0.29m wide by 0.27m deep hold a split oak plank, with two 10cm diameter footholds, in slots measuring 0.76m long by 8cm wide. The footholds are closed by a pair of chains and replacement locks. The stock are enclosed to the rear by a sandstone wall which forms the superstructure to the stone seat. The coping stones above the sandstone wall include holes which once held railings, indicating that the stones are re-used. The monument is displayed openly and the nearby village notice board displays historical information which includes reference to the stocks (3 & 4).
