Salt working was carried out in Aldersey in Elizabethan times and field names such as Salt Brook Meadow and Salt Grass suggest this activity. Leland (vol 6) notes that 'Aldresey hath bene a salt pit, but now decayed, as almoste in tyme out of mynde' (1).

SJ4656 Possible Deserted Medieval Village at Aldersey mentioned in 1180-1220. Saltworking was carried out here in Elizabethan times

"Leland notices Saltworks in this township. There is a brine spring of sufficent strength to leave an occasional incrustation on the banks; but from the distance of coal, salt has not been made here for many years."
