Summary

Malpas was granted a market charter during the reign of Edward I. There is no documentary evidence to support the claim of a royal charter, but certainly as early as the first half of 14th century, a market was in existence. The site of the old market was close to the church, but sometime during the 14th century the site moved to the crossroads location of Church Street and High Street, now marked by the Market Cross.
