Full Description
By the High Cross stood the pillory, whipping post and stocks. The pillory was elevated. The offender would stand with his face towards Bridge Street and would have affixed to his front and to his back a sign relating his offence. His ears would be cut off or mutilated. Occasionally gallows were erected at the cross, but these were more usually outside the city gates (1).
