The remains of walls and a brick floor forming a cellar were excavated in 2024 north of Union Terrace road. Cartographic evidence suggests that the cellar and its associated building were constructed in the early to mid-19th century and had clearly been built much later than the houses forming Union Terrace. Properties were first constructed along Union Terrace in the late 18th century. These are first shown as a row of buildings on Stockdale’s map of 1796. This row is shown more clearly on Cole’s map of 1805 and by the time of Wood’s map of 1833, an additional block had been constructed to the north of Union Terrace, along a side street, Sydney Street. The cellar uncovered within Trench 1 appears to have formed part of a building situated between the two rows of properties shown on the 1833 map and was likely constructed in the intervening period between 1833 and 1875. A sandstone flag found to the south of the cellar was laid at a higher level, roughly the same height as the top of the surviving cellar walls. It is likely that this represented the remains of an internal floor surface within a different part of the same building.
