Summary

Non-archaeological excavations at the southeast corner of Seller St. in 1817 produced several coins of Vespasian (AD 69 - 79), in addition to a cream-coloured lachrymatory. A lachrymatory is a small phial of glass or alabaster, usually found in association with Roman burials. They are so named because some people believe they were intended to hold tears.

Full Description

In 1817, during the construction of a cellar at the junction of Foregate Street and Seller Street, several coins of Vespasian, and a cream- coloured pottery lachrymatory were found. Because it is reported as 'several' coins, there is a possibly that this find represents a hoard (1) (2).
