Summary

A spigot mortar base uncovered during flood defence work in the area of the Kingsway Bridge. Spigot mortars are an anti-tank or anti-personnel weapon dating from the Second World War. The mounting is typically a drum of concrete with a domed top. The top has a metal pin for mounting the mortar on.

Reported to the HER in 2022. A Spigot mortar base was identifed in "The Twiggeries" by the correspondent in 2009. In 2014/15 during flood defence work in the area of the Kingsway Bridge the Spigot Mortar base waslocated in a spoil heap which was identified by the individual reporting to find to the HER. The mortar base was subsequently relocated at on site with an interpretation board. Six figure grid reference supplied to encompass the original location.
