<2> AAA Archaeological Advisors, 2004, Canal Road, Congleton, Archaeological Watching Brief Report (Client Report). SCH4555.
A watching brief undertaken in 2004 showed that a kiln had been built into the northern embankment of the canal soon after the construction of the canal in 1831. The structure of the kiln was revealed, along with the extensive burning of the surrounding deposits. The kiln was probably constructed for the processing of limestone from the quarry to the south of Astbury, which had been transported to the site along the canal. The lime would then have been made into mortar for use within the town
