Full Description

A pit/post hole (feature 193) was excavated as part of a scheme of mitigation during the construction of the A536 Congleton Link Road. It was an ovoid cut measuring 0.63m by 0.48m, with a depth of 0.19m. The posthole had a V-shaped profile with a rounded base, containing a single fill deposit (194) of grey brown sandy silt, which was sampled for analysis. The sample was found to contain charred hazelnut shells which gave a radiocarbon date of the early Neolithic period, 3763-3646 cal BC. Further pits/postholes (103, 195 and 261) occur within the same area and although they did not produce any material evidence, may date to the same period, although they do not appear to form a consistent pattern indicative of structural remains.
