Monument record 15903 - Excavated ditched boundary and pond, north of Wall Hill Roundabout

Please read our .

Summary

A north-south ditched boundary, which appears to have been re-cut a number of times, was excavated as part of a scheme of mitigation during the construction of the A536 Congleton Link Road. At the southern end of the linear a large, sub-circular pond feature was also identified. This was excavated up to a depth of 1.66m and four fill deposits were recorded. While no finds were recovered from the pond, radiocarbon assay of a wood fragment obtained from a monolith sample provided an AMS date in the medieval period, 1418-1460 cal AD.

Full Description

<1> Oxford Archaeology North, 2021, A536 Congleton Link Road: Archaeological Report, R4713 (Asset 115) (Client Report). SCH9479.

A north-south ditched boundary was excavated as part of a scheme of mitigation during the construction of the A536 Congleton Link Road. On excavation, what appeared to be a single ditch, turned out to be a series of ditches (6 ditches were recorded in one trench), cut on the same alignment.

At the southern end of the linear a large, sub-circular pond feature was also identified. This was excavated up to a depth of 1.66m before natural clay was observed. Four fill deposits were recorded and monolith samples taken. While no finds were recovered from the pond, radiocarbon assay of a wood fragment obtained from the monolith samples provided an AMS date in the medieval period, 1418-1460 cal AD.

A north-south boundary is depicted on the tithe map for Newbold Astbury Township (c1839) at the approximate location of the excavated ditches.
