Monument record 15901 - Excavated township boundary, roundabout at Back Lane

A ditched boundary, correlating with the line of a township boundary, was excavated as part of a scheme of mitigation during the construction of the A536 Congleton Link Road.

Trench 128.2 was sited across the township boundary within the footprint of a roundabout, linked to Back Lane, to be constructed as part of the development. A linear cut (12803) was recorded orientated south to north. Once excavated, it was revealed that the boundary ditch had been subject to modification and in fact comprised two or more cuts. Cut 12803, the earliest of the two ditches, measured 1.05m wide and 0.30m deep. The western edge had a shallow slope, less than 45°, and a wide relatively flat base. The eastern edge had been truncated by re-cut 12809. A single fill deposit (12807) was observed, comprising a mid-brown, sandy silt, with a slight clay component, and was 0.19m thick. Re-cut 12809 truncated the eastern edge of the original cut, and had a steep-sided profile with a flat base, producing a slightly squared, U-shaped profile, approximately 0.60m wide and 0.31m deep. Again, a single fill was observed, deposit 12808, a dark grey/brown, slightly clay, sandy silt.
