A ditched boundary (Asset 127), orientated north-east/south-west and correlating with the line of a township boundary, was excavated as part of a scheme of mitigation during the construction of the A536 Congleton Link Road.

Two trenches (trenches 127.1-2) were excavated across a hedgerow that followed the line of the former township boundary. A ditch (12703) was recorded and measured 1.55m wide and was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.56m. Its edges were both moderately steep, although the western edge was more concave in profile than the east. The base was narrow and curved giving the ditch a wide V-shaped profile. In total, seven fill deposits were identified within the ditch. The ditch was also identified in the second trench (127.2) as a 1.90m wide linear following the same trajectory as that in Trench 127.1. The cut was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.55m. The western edge of the cut had a shallower slope than it’s counterpart in Trench 127.1, and the eastern edge was difficult to see among heavy disturbance from rooting and animal burrows, but a largely similar, wide V-profile was assumed. Due to the heavy disturbance, only three separate fill deposits were identified. No finds were recovered, nor was there any trace of an associated bank adjacent to the ditch on either side, although ploughing within the adjacent fields may have removed any evidence.
