The remains of two probable furrows (ridge and furrow cultivation) were excavated (Trench 124.2) as part of a scheme of mitigation during the construction of the A536 Congleton Link Road.
Cut 203 was located at the eastern end of the trench, it measured 1.35m wide, with a maximum depth of 0.38m. The cut featured steep sides (approx. 60°) and a wide, slightly concave, base giving the feature a U-shaped profile. Two fill deposits were observed, a base fill (204), which was a dark grey, waterborne silt, measuring 0.23m thick, and overlying this was upper fill 205, a lighter grey silt. No finds were recovered from either fill deposit.
Cut 206 was located 4m west of cut 203, and measured 1.39m wide with a maximum depth of 0.25m. The cut featured a wide slightly concave base with edges varying between 45° and 60°, creating a slightly splayed U-shaped profile. A single fill deposit (207) was observed. Fill 207 was a mid-grey/brown, naturally-formed sandy silt, that produced no finds. Both cut 203 and 206 were interpreted as probable furrows.
