<1> Oxford Archaeology North, 2021, A536 Congleton Link Road: Archaeological Report, R4713 (Asset 124) (Client Report). SCH9479.
The remains of a ditch (Asset 124, trench 124.1) was excavated as part of a scheme of mitigation during the construction of the A536 Congleton Link Road. The boundary is depicted on the Tithe Map for Eaton Township of 1840. The ditch was 3.4m wide, with steep sides and a rounded base, containing three fill deposits. The western edge of the cut was longer and shallower, giving it an irregular profile. Base fill deposit 103 comprised a dark grey/black silt, 0.20m thick, and contained a ceramic land drain-pipe. The land drain was suspended within deposit 103, suggesting it was placed after the feature had begun to silt up. Overlying deposit 103 was a second, lighter grey silt deposit 104, measuring 0.30m thick. A final silt deposit (105) lay above this, completing the fill of the feature.
