Full Description

House, now residential home. c1820, with twentieth century alterations. Stucco with Welsh slate roof. Two storeys, three-window range with central entrance. Moulded wood case to four-panelled door with overlight, in Ionic porch. Flanking segmentally-arched full-height bays, each with tripartite sash window (without glazing bars) on each floor. Two-pane sash window over doorway. Four-window return to right has sixteen-pane sash windows surviving to first floor. Axial stacks. INTERIOR: central entrance and stair hall, retaining original staircase. Some nineteenth century fireplaces and simple plaster cornices also survive. Late twentieth century extensions to rear not included in the listing.

Upton Priory belonged in the seventeenth century to the Wright family, and passed through marriage to William Tatton in 1698, who later sold to Robert Harrop. The house was still occupied by his descendants in the 1870s.

A residence and estate here, called Upton Priory, the property of Charles Harrop Beck, esq. grandson of Thomas Beck of this place, and of Salford, was the property of a Macclesfield family, named Wright, in the seventeenth century, whose heiress, daughter of Alderman Wright, 1698, brought it into the possession of William Tatton of Withenshawe, esq. who sold it to a family named Harrop, of Broken-cross in this neighbourhood, whose coheiress at the beginning of this century carried it in marriage to the said Thomas Beck.
