Full Description
<1> Oxford Archaeology North, 2022, Chester Northgate Redevelopment: Phase 1 Post-Excavation Assessment Report, R4690 (Client Report). SCH9431.
Four pits of potential early medieval date were recorded during the excavation of groundworks undertaken in 2020-1 as part of the Northgate redevelopment scheme. One pit (feature 209), with a crude cobble lining, was located in the western end of the surface-water drainage trench on Hunter Street; it was sealed by an accumulation of dark soil that can only be broadly assigned to the later medieval/early post-medieval period. The other three pits (769, 773, 775) were located in pile cap Row A on the northern edge of the grassy knoll. All had been dug through the soil and rubble deposits marking the abandonment and decay/demolition of buildings within the Roman fortress, and were directly sealed by late post-medieval or modern deposits. No pottery or other artefacts of early medieval date were recovered.
