Full Description
<1> Oxford Archaeology North, 2022, Chester Northgate Redevelopment: Phase 1 Post-Excavation Assessment Report, R4690 (Client Report). SCH9431.
Evidence of a major north/south road separating Insula XXII, an area of barrack blocks, from Insula XXI, containing a possible courtyard and other ranges of buildings within the fortress, was recorded in 2020-1, during the excavation of a foundation pile mat for the market/cinema on the south side of Hunter Street, part of the Northgate redevelopment scheme. Although much of the street had been previously removed through excavations in the late 1970s/early 1980s (Strickand 1982, see source 2), the patchy remains of a metalled surface, some 9m in width, made of cobbles, pebbles and sandstone fragments were recorded. Traces of at least two subsequent resurfacings or minor repairs were evident. The majority of the pottery from deposits associated with the street dated to the late first/early second century date, although a small amount of early/mid second century material was recovered from a few layers.
