There are eighteenth century documentary references to the well (1737) and village pump (1765). This pump stood over the town well at the bottom of Well Street (aka Well Way). In 1832 the rate payers of Malpas approached the two major landowners, Lord Cholmondeley and Squire Drake, to improve the access to water in the village. They financed the building in 1835 of a waterworks on the Good Moors to the south-east of the town. The town pump continued in use into the twentieth century, to serve those residents close to it who could not afford a connection to the piped system.

<7> Cheshire County Council, 2002, Cheshire Historic Towns Survey: Chester District Part 1: Archaeological Assessments, Malpas p.4 (Report). SCH6979.

Documentary reference to Well Street in 1404.
