Summary

Caves which are now continuous, illustrating the pillar and stall system of excavation with three entrance openings which are fenced off. Close to the road, by the wall in the south-east part of the outer ward. Said to have been used in the Civil War as stables but “In the 19th century they were known as ‘Beresford’s Caves’, supposedly named after a local inhabitant who made a living from quarrying sandstone.”

Close to the road, by the wall in the south-east part of the outer ward. Said to have been used in the Civil War as stables but “In the 19th century they were known as ‘Beresford’s Caves’, supposedly named after a local inhabitant who made a living from quarrying sandstone.”

The caves are now continuous, illustrating the pillar and stall system of excavation with three entrance openings which are fenced off. The caves are occupied by bats.
