A series of shallow ditches, some forming enclosures, and most likely representing the remains of a field system, were recorded during an archaeological evaluation in 2022 to the north of Sutton New Hall Farm. The ditches do not coincide with features depicted on historic mapping and were heavily truncated by ploughing. The recovery of a sherd of Romano-British pottery and fragments of ceramic building material from two of the ditches, indicate a Roman date. A pit containing burnt material was also found in the southern part of the site.
It is possible that the main focus of settlement activity lies under the present farm complex and, interestingly, there are 19th-century references (see CHER 13/1/2) to a subterranean chamber on the site of the present farmhouse which may relate to the Roman activity.
