Landscape record 1819/1/3 - Gardens and Parkland at Calveley Hall, Handley

17th century garden associated with the Hall from which with garden walls and fine gate piers survive. There are few gardens of this period in Cheshire, which is recorded in the 1822 Terrier of Handley.Greenwood’s County Map of 1819 suggests ornamental landscape associated with the Hall.

A Terrier of the Township of Handley 1822 shows the layout of lands surrounding the Hall in some detail . The Hall is now referred to as ‘Calveley Hall Farm’, with outbuildings shown. Formal blocks of tree planting are shown within an area named “Milton Green” opposite the principal east elevation of the Hall which has a forecourt planted as a garden. A second garden lies to the south and an orchard to the west. There is a mixed plantation north east of the Hall.

Bryant’s County Map, 1831, identifies the immediate environs of the Hall as ‘park’, and shows a formal avenue of trees east of the Hall.

AS of 2023 The Hall and garden areas are in a state of disrepair; the gardens are overgrown and sections of the garden walls are broken. The gate piers, with a Greek cross plan, are capped by large Calveley Hall, Handley ball finials remain but the gates are missing. There is no trace of the designed landscape depicted on the terrier maps of 1822; only the fine gate piers and sections of the walls remain.
