Monument record 15713 - Site of Green Lane farmhouse

An archaeological building survey was undertaken in 2022 of the farmhouse at Green Lane Farm, Bollington, prior to its demolition. The building is a two story building constructed in rough, uncoursed, sandstone rubble and has a double pitched roof of slate. A small extension lies to the north and traces of whitewash are visible over the whole of the building. A brick chimney stack lies on the northern side of the house. It was erected in the mid 18th century as a two-unit house which was later added to with the extension of a unit to the north. The lean-to was added in the mid – late 19th century. The building was substantially altered in the 20th century, with the insertion of windows and new sections of walling to both the north and south elevations. Hand cut timber lintels and beams were still present internally however, and the overall plan form remained the same.

The farmhouse is depicted on the 1849 Tithe map of Bollington. Two buildings are shown, one appearing in the location of the farmhouse, with another building to the east. It is shown as a rectangular structure, aligned roughly north – south with a small extension to the western side of the northern elevation. The buildings are situated at the southern end of a long narrow field, suggestive of a Medieval strip field. Further strip fields are shown to the east and west. Outside of these strip fileds, the field boundaries are fairly regular and rectangular, suggesting they were formed as a part of the post-medieval Inclosure Act. James Harrop was both the owner and occupier of the plot, along with the strip fields to either side, on the tithe apportionment.
