Summary

Former field boundaries surviving as earthworks to the west of Hollinset Farm. It is possible that these field boundaries date from the medieval period and the fields are mentioned in an early seventeenth century source.

Full Description

<1> Bluesky International Ltd, 2015-2017, Aerial Photography for Great Britain, Bluesky International APGB Imagery 2015-2017, SJ9468, 08/04/2017 (Aerial Photograph). SCH8848.

A gently curving north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear earthwork, possibly comprising a ditch on the western side and a bank on the eastern side, and possibly forming a lynchet id visible on this aerial imagery. The earthwork is c.190 metres long and 8.5 metres wide.

The earthwork described in (1) is clearly visible. However, the southern end may continue to the south-east as a lynchet for c.70 metres. At c.130 from the northern end, on the eastern side and aligned at 90 degrees to the earthwork, is a shorter slightly curving earthwork running east-south-east.

The earthworks generally correspond to plot boundaries depicted on this map.

The earliest documentary reference to Hollinset dates from 1285. Field adjacent to the boundaries, Dumble Meadow (Dumbellane Pasture) and Barn Field, are mentioned in a document of 1611.
