The Tithe map and award for Cranage township depicts a field surrounded on four sides by the River Dane. It is called Bradwall Wharf.

<2> Dodgson J McN, 1970-2, 1981, The Place-Names of Cheshire, Vol.II p.225 (Book). SCH3228.

<3> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 20/07/2022 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

Although the EPNS (see 2) doesn’t make a connection, it is possible that the name Bradwall incorporated in this plot’s name (and the name of the adjacent plot to the east) may derive from the lost field name le Bradeclif appearing in mid to late thirteenth century documents. Alternatively it may derive from the family name associated with the nearby township of Bradwall.
