Summary

A public house dating from the early nineteenth century with a 1950s interior. The building used to incorporate a shop and a post office. A yard with associated smithy and shippon was located to the rear.

Full Description

Inn, formerly incorporating post office and village store. Early nineteenth century, with minor alterations. Brown Brick of irregular bond; gabled grey slate roof with four brick chimneys on ridge. Long street frontage range, with two and three-light window openings with twentieth century small-paned and two-pane window frames. Cambered skewback arches to openings to lower storey.

The building is split between two plots. The northern plot is described as: Public house called the "Red Lion" cowhouse smithy yard and garden. The southern plot is described as: two cottages and garden.

The building appears to be split into four properties. The northern property is labelled: Red Lion (P.H.). Behind the public house is a yard surrounded on three sides by outbuildings. Access to the yard is off Goose Lane.

The depiction is similar to the preceding map (see 3), except the public house isn’t named.

An early nineteenth century multi-roomed inn refitted in the 1950s. It retains many of the fixtures and fittings of this date. The former village post office and store on the right-hand end of the building has been converted into a restaurant.
